Chris White comes to Abu Dhabi - Author visit

Today we were fortunate enough to have a special guest enter our shared area. Chris White is a famous author of children poetry. He shared with us some of his fantastic poetry - including 'Croc and Roll' and 'The Recyclicorn' - and inspired us all to write our very own poetry.

Here are some photo's of the visit, including Maryam from the Nightjars taking on the role of 'Pencil Girl'. A huge thank you to Chris for making us laugh, sharing his poetry and inspiring us all!

If you would like to read more of Chris White's poems, please visit http://veggievampire.com/

Explanation Texts

We have been learning about 'Explanation Texts' in English lessons. In Mr Rahim's writing group we have been working hard to identify the features of explanation texts by reading and then highlighting key features in a range of texts.

We then chose a process we could explain using all the features we found out about.

Do you know how to use a Playstation 4? Or subscribe to a YouTube channel? Have a look at a selection of our explanation texts to find out how. Please comment and tell us what you think.

Homework Superstars!

Take a look at the fantastic Chinese Kite that Armaan has made and the superb Roman Numeral clock face that Sarah has created.
The teachers in Year 5 can't wait to see the wonderful homework that all of the children are busy working on.
We look forward to giving lots of well-deserved house points too!

Adventures!

After an introduction to Michael Morpurgo and a taster of some of his fantastic books, we have been busy writing our very own exciting adventure stories!

In Miss Smith's Writing lesson we enjoyed sharing our stories with each other and had the opportunity to give helpful feedback comments.

Comment below to share the favourite part of your story with others. Did you include a fantastic 2A sentence, simile or metaphor you could share also?

House Treasure Hunt

It was an exciting day in Year 5 last Thursday, as the children took part in their first house competition of the academic year.

The children had to work together to solve clues and answer questions about their house leader in order to collect pieces of a puzzle, which were hidden around the academy.

Well done to all the children for working as a team, having fun and showing excellent sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Hillary house for winning the Year 5 treasure hunt!

Similes!

Today in Mr Rahim’s writing group, we have been using similes and powerful adjectives to improve our setting descriptions. We know that similes can be a powerful writing tool to help build images in the minds of our readers.

Here are some examples:

The shiny, crystal sea surrounded the island like a blue blanket.
(Mohamed S)

The turquoise, heaving waves were splashing like the snake ride in Yas Waterworld.
(Mohamed H)

The brown tree was as tall as a flag pole.
(Maktoum)

The tall palm trees were as spiky as a puffer fish.
(Sheikha)
