World Book Day

This morning, Year 5 had the opportunity to share their reading with some Year 8 students. They discussed the books they were currently reading as well as their favourite authors and books.

"The Year 8 children were excellent readers and asked me lots of questions about my book. It was fun to talk to them about books." (Millie - Year 5)

"I talked to Ahmed & Zayed about Kensuke's Kingdom. We had all read this book before and talked about how to survive on a desert island." (Rashed - Year 5)

Science Assembly

We were very lucky to have the secondary science department carry out some demonstrations during our Year 5 assembly today.

Have a look at the videos below? What do you think happened? Why did the flame burn in that way? Is this a reversible reaction?

Science - Changing State

We have started our new Science topic of Materials and Changes of State.

This week we carried out our first experiment to carry out a chemical reaction and observe how the particles in a gas will move and occupy the space available to it. Have a look at our timelapse video below.

We are looking forward to many practical experiments we will be carrying out over the next few weeks.

"We saw that when the bicarbonate of soda interacted with the vinegar it fizzed up and all the gas went up. Since there wasn't an opening it blew up the balloon."

F1 Expert Morning

It's F1 intensive week in Year 5! Apart from specialist lessons, children will be focusing on their F1 projects and completing all their tasks in preparation for our trips to the Yas Marina track next week.

We were lucky to begin the week with a 'round table' of experts. We benefitted from a range of activities and presentations from experts in the fields of engineering, branding, design, small business start up and public speaking. We will use these skills in the weeks ahead.

A huge thanks to Mrs Devlin, Lieutenant Ali and Mrs Meakin for giving up their time to speak to us.

Please read the Flaming Formula 4 team's review of the week at their blog below

Poetry

The Year 5 children have been enjoying their new Literacy unit on Poetry.

We found out about a range of different poems, such as Haiku and Tanka and Cinquain.

Can you remember the features of these poems?

Have a look at some samples of our Haiku below.

Haiku

Gazelle by Ahmed
Run thirsty gazelle
speeding, galloping, leaping
finding your oasis.

The Desert by Eissa
Fast moving smooth sand
the light, yellow, fluffy sun
the cool, windy breeze.

Desert by Rashed
Hot, flaming desert,
gazelle leaps in vast desert
beautiful gazelle.

Camel by Jawaher

are like a shiny sunshine
walking around me.

moving around the city
amazing weather view.
